Highways maintenance in East Cambridgeshire

Having imposed a 20mph speed limit, County Council raises council tax by maximum permitted while your roads continue to crumble

Cambridgeshire County Council is increasing your Council Tax by the maximum allowed again this year.

The Liberal Democrat-Labour-Independent coalition administration is applauding itself for its additional investment into Highways Maintenance.  Don’t get too excited in East Cambs, folks. Below is the sum total of the planned road maintenance in our district over the next 2 years:

So if a road in the Surface Treatment Scheme list has deteriorated too far when it gets inspected, it will be removed from the programme.

The Liberal Democrat, Labour, Independent coalition administration voted AGAINST the Conservative budget amendment which would have put an extra £22m into Highways Maintenance.

The Liberal Democrat, Labour, Independent coalition administration like to talk about the “managed decline” of the network before they inherited it, but the reality is they voted AGAINST Conservative increased funding for Highways every year in every budget, including this year.  Conservatives put in capitalised funding of £90m in the past.

Everyone can see that money is being poorly spent on failing repairs and that the contractors are not being held to account.

Everyone can see that money is being spent on schemes like 20mph speed limits, road closures and road restrictions while the network falls apart.

Come on Cambridgeshire County Council — we can do better than this.
