PRESS RELEASE
STATEMENT FROM EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL CONSERVATIVE GROUP
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, 15th June 2026
COUNCILLOR LEE DENNEY JOINS CONSERVATIVES AT EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL
East Cambridgeshire District Council’s Conservative Group has welcomed Councillor Lee Denney to both the Conservative Group and the Conservative Party, strengthening the administration as it continues to deliver for residents across the district.
Councillor Denney, who represents Stretham Ward, has been working alongside the Conservative and Independent Group in recent months and has now formally joined the Conservative Party.
Councillor Lee Denney said: “It has been an honour and privilege to serve as your local District Councillor for the Stretham Ward.
“When I was first elected, I was a member of the Liberal Democrat and Independent Group. However, after working with the group for almost a year, it became apparent that I was unable to achieve the outcomes and deliver the changes that I believe would demonstrate a meaningful difference to those residents I represent.
“Over recent months, I have worked closely with the Conservative and Independent Group and have been impressed by their proactive and dynamic approach to serving residents of East Cambridgeshire, alongside their commitment to delivering positive outcomes for local communities. This has convinced me wholeheartedly that the Conservative Group will allow me to better serve my constituents.
“As a result, I have taken the decision to join the Conservative Group on East Cambridgeshire District Council and am hoping to stand as a Conservative candidate at next year’s unitary council elections.
“My priorities remain unchanged. I will continue to work hard, whilst listening to residents, and advocate tirelessly to benefit our communities.
“I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Stretham Ward.”
Leader of the Council and the Conservative Group, Councillor Anna Bailey said: “We are delighted to welcome Lee to both the Conservative Group and the Conservative Party. Over recent months he has demonstrated a strong commitment to residents, a practical approach to getting things done, and a determination to deliver for local communities.
“This move strengthens our team at an important time for local government. East Cambridgeshire has a strong record of delivery, freezing council tax for thirteen consecutive years, maintaining zero external borrowing, protecting free parking, delivering major infrastructure projects and maintaining a balanced budget for the years ahead.
“As we await the Government’s decisions on local government reorganisation and the move towards new unitary councils, our focus remains exactly where it should be – delivering high-quality services, strong finances and positive outcomes for residents across East Cambridgeshire.”
The move means the Conservative administration returns to operating with an overall majority on East Cambridgeshire District Council, providing continued stability as the authority prepares for the next phase of local government reform.
