GOVERNMENT DELAYS DECISION ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE & PETERBOROUGH

I am disgusted the Government has chosen to delay this important decision in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough with no explanation whatsoever.

All Councils across the county have invested an enormous amount of time, effort and expertise in developing proposals in line with the Government’s requested timetable.  To now leave local authorities waiting, with no clarity about the reasons for the delay, is deeply disrespectful to everyone who has worked so hard on this process.

The Government is still expecting us to deliver reorganisation to the same time-frame; this delay simply reduces the already limited time available to deliver one of the biggest changes to local government in decades.  Every month lost increases the pressure, complexity and risk of achieving a safe and successful transition by April 2028.

While Ministers disappear on their summer recess, our focus remains on continuing to deliver services for residents and ensuring any reorganisation is delivered properly.

The Government now owes local Councils, our staff and the people we serve a clear explanation for this delay and certainty about the way forward.
